MacBook Pro Screen- Apple charging me $500 for a $10-$20 repair?

Recently, I closed my MacBook Pro (2018) with a small piece of rubber caught in the joint in between the screen and bottom part of the computer and this caused the MacBook Pro logo baffle glass to crack.

The screen works totally fine, I have no issues other than cosmetic. You would think a reputable company would treat the repair as such, but think again! Of course, I am 6 months outside the warranty, so Apple wants to charge me $500 to do a complete screen replacement! I am "baffled" at this because the logo baffle piece is entirely separate from the screen!

This is a very expensive computer that works 100% fine. The last thing I want to do is have a total screen replacement done when it is not even needed! If it's not broken, don't fix it.

I've seen people conduct the logo baffle repair themselves for about $15-$20, essentially just heating the baffle piece until the adhesive is soft and then pulling it off. Replacement piece is less than $20 on Ebay.

Anyone have any advice? Of course the Apple "Genius" specified that if I were to repair myself, it would void the product from being able to be repaired by apple in the future.

You have, as I see it, three options: 1)Pay Apple and maintain your ability to get service on the device from Apple in the future, 2) do it yourself (really bad idea unless you have experience in electronics repair) or 3) pay a third party repair shop to do it. An Authorized Apple Service Provider may well have different pricing than Apple while still maintaining your Apple options in the future. Other unauthorized options may do it for much less and will at least have the experience that you may lack. Make sure you find out what warranty they offer.

... there are two other options Users have reported using to solve the cracked bottom bezel only problem,

4) one strip of black electrical tape. This contains the cracking and keeps stray glass from floating around.

5) if you are handy, there are now third-party metal bezels available as parts. As observed, this modification may keep Apple from performing repairs in the future, and you could damage your Mac in the process.
