No Room to Install Catalina

Storage shows 102.64GB system, 8.1GB apps and 1.77GB other. How do I free up system space to download Catalina. Documents, downloads, and photos have been cleaned up (only 1.77GB now). I tried to delete Parental Controls (don't have kids), but apparently I'm not allowed to do that (guess there is a Corporate Parent??). What can I delete in System to free up space?

Hi Scarlett39,

My pleasure.

For applications you can take a look at AppCleaner. it will remove all files associated with that specific applications. Just drag an application onto it and it will remove all support files.

I would be careful removing files from the System folder for applications as it could cause them to stop working. I would look under Reduce Clutter at your own files and go from there and not mess with system files.

I hope this helps.

Hi Scarlett39,

Thanks for this information.

Do you have a backup drive or an external drive with a lot of space?

I would take a look at what large files you have on your Mac and transfer them to an external drive.

To do this, go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > Storage > Manage and click Review Files next to Reduce Clutter. From there it will list all the large files you have on your drive and a way to locate them to transfer to your external if you wish to keep it or to delete it if not.

It's sorted by type on the side, for example Applications, Documents, Messages, Music, etc.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I'll get an external hard drive and transfer some files. In searching for things to delete I noticed Adobe Acrobat Reader files from way back in 2015, among others. Is it safe to delete the old files. keeping only the most current ones, or are they still necessary for the operation of Adobe? Is there some kind of "sweeper" that I can run to clean off old files such as these on the hard drive?
