Photos not finding referenced files

Completed Catalina upgrade. Photos showed many referenced photo files that it had previously been linked to as not being found. Repaired library. Same problem. Created new library from scratch. Same problem. Initially the photos are shown as being referenced, but the next time I open app, some are not.

I'm running Photos on an iMac Pro purchased earlier this year. 64GB, 3 Ghz 10 core Intel Xeon, 1.39 of 2 TB available. Approximately 38,000 photos, 500 videos.

Hello Emerald Vista,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are issue with the Photos app on your iMac Pro having photos with an error about referenced files are not being found, even after trying some good troubleshooting steps. First, try running First Aid on your hard drive with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct issues like you're experiencing.

Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Graphics performance limited in macOS Recovery, safe mode, or Guest User mode

Cheers!

  • Thanks for the replies
  • First some data points -- All 38,000+ photos and 450+ videos being accessed by the Photos app are referenced. They are on the internal 2TB Flash Storage taking up 283GB. There is 1.28TB still available.
  • I have only one Library, it is located in Pictures, it is designated as the "System Photo Library"
  • I am not using iCloud Photos, My Photo Stream or Shared Albums
  • These same items were referenced under Mojave and earlier OS using both Photos and Aperture on this iMac Pro
  • The files missing references are a very small portion of the library.
  • When one clicks on the "white icon w/red line" it says "locate referenced file", clicking on this sometimes brings up Finder sometimes not, when it does bring up Finder and you select the folder where the file is present, sometimes it repairs the link sometimes not.
  • My work around is to delete the file missing the reference and the reimport it.
  • Some of the "repaired" files have stayed repaired, some have missing references that show up days later.
  • Since the reference process seemed to be working prior to Catalina, my first inclination is to believe the changes made as part of Catalina play a role
  • Many thanks for your help

  • All of the referenced files are within folders within the "Documents" folder of the only "User"
  • The missing reference can apply to .jpg, .jpeg, .tiff and various video formats
  • The file can sometimes be opened with "Open Viewer" from the Image pull down menu
  • The file can sometimes be edited
  • While clicking on the reference icon in upper right corner of photo usually produces no result, sometimes the Finder will open if "Show Referenced File in Finder" is selected in the File pull down menu
  • The Color Profile on the ones I checked appears to be the same for both linked and unlinked
  • As admin I have read/write permissions for all

Can you tell us, where you are keeping the original image files of your referenced photos? where are they stored? On an external volume or on your system volume? have you checked, if the originals are still there, where they should be? If they are on an external drive - is the drive directly plugged in and not used for Time Machine backups?

The files missing references are a very small portion of the library.

Is there anything common about the referenced files in question? Do they have common properties, like the file format or the color sync profile? One of the changes in Catalina is, that it is more strict with the file ownership and permissions. You are saying, that the referenced files are on your internals system drive. Are they in your home folder or outside your home folder? Do you have read/write access to the folder with the referenced files?
