Catalina a problem

My iMac is about three years old and came with an earlier OS - I think Mojave. The external drive I used for Backups crashed last month, so I don't have a backup or Time Machine point prior to Catalina. I have Mojave Installer in my apps, but it won't allow me to install. I've tried to get Mojave on an external drive, but no luck as of yet. I've lost the ability to use about 30 of my primary apps for my job as a result of Catalina. Please tell me how to remove Catalina and go back to Mojave that will allow the 32 bit apps.

Without a backup things are risky and can be very difficult and cumbersome. You may end up having to completely wipe your drive and set it all up as new, first copying any data files you have so you can hand restore them later.

I don't know if an iMac does Snapshots. If it does, read this:

https://communities.apple.com/fr/thread/250788825?answerId=251498564722#251498564722

"It is possible to attempt to return to the old system before installation even without Time Machine backup. Mac Os sets up an internal backup system (Snapshots) on special occasions and the system update is one of them.

In short, it is necessary to start in recovery mode (cmd + r during the boot) then to request the restoration Time Machine. There select the system disk (Macintosh HD in general) as Time Machine source and see what is on offer. With a little luck will appear a date / time prior to the update with the correct system version. If so, select it and then start the restore." [Google Translation]
