Following each power off start, I have to unplug the Logitech USB radio part, turn off the MX mouse, plug in the radio part, then turn the MX mouse back on, at which point all is okay ...
until next time I power down the iMac.
Any fixes for this? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Please check with the developers to see if they have updated drivers, the problem with using third party hardware is you are dependent on them keeping up-to-date. However if you need that type of mouse, that is really your only solution.
Seems to be a Logitech problem.
Another issue was that my Catalina boot up time was really slow, well over one minute (all SSD).
After I uninstalled all of the Logitech applications, now boot up is my normal 25 seconds.
I will really miss my mouse button custom definitions, but I guess that is it for now.
The Logitech website says they are aware of problems and working on fixes.
I do need the ergonomic aspects of the MX mouse series, so the tiny iMac OEM mouse is not an option for me (causes discomfort).
I'm sure it will get worked out in time, there must be thousands of Mac Logitech mouse users.

I was mistaken, the problem occurs on a regular restart, in addition to power up.
That's good news. Hopefully they will get it fixed quickly.
Please try resetting the NVRAM per the directions in How to reset NVRAM on your Mac and if that does not work, please restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally, those instructions are in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
