iPad streaming with a lightning AV device

iPad streams ESPN+ OK when not hooked to my lightning AV device which is hooked to my Samsung TV.

When hooked to the AV device the chosen item looks like it loading (the wheel spins around for a few seconds) but it never starts up

iPad (6th gen) WiFi

apps has the option of blocking airplay if the developer so choosees

if other airplay stuff works then it's blocked by ESPN+

It works when its only the ipad, so it seems it should work when hooked through the AV device.

I guess I don't understand what "airplay" means
