IOS update alert made my Apple, does it affect IPad?

I have an IPad air WiFi only (the first one) and it is on IOS 10.3.3 , I haven't updated it in 2 years.

I heard that certain apple devices have to be updated , but I also read it doesn't affect IPad operating on WiFi only (only affecting WiFi + cellular).

Do I need to update from IOS 10 to IOS 12?

If so, is there any chance that when I do update it can go wrong and all of the IPad data is erased?

I do have a Icloud backup, but it is a IOS 10 backup and I'm not sure if it makes any difference

Will I be affected by this required IOS update?

What happens next?

Thank you

iPad Air, iOS 10

This is likely the bulletin to which you refer:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210239

If your iPad is not on the list of affected models, then you have nothing to worry about.

The bulletin applies only to Cellular models of some devices - as, due to GPS “rollover” event, affected models will derive an incorrect location/time after 3rd November. This computation error will prevent an “over the update” of iOS after this date - the workaround for which requires that affected devices are updated before 3/11 - or must be updated from a PC/Mac and restored from a backup.
