I get this Not enough disk space available

I get this prompt whenever I try to add a sound effect from the audio library: "There is not enough disk space available at the selected destination. Please choose another one or clear up some space." I'm using a 4TB external drive to edit from and there's at least 2TB of space on the drive. I do not have optimized media selected. I do no make copy of my files (leave in place). And I am able to add music from my hard drive and all other media types, but not a sound effect from FCPX.

Found a workaround for this issue from an another thread and wanted to share it.

  • Moved the iMovie to Trash. IMPORTANT Don't delete the iMovie library.
  • Installed the iMovie app from App store
  • Opened the app and it automatically picked up the same iMovie library and downloaded the projects
  • Then tested the import media. Was able to import images and mp3.
  • Then emptied the Trash.

Regarding the external hard drive, it's been xfat forever and I have been editing with FCPX for a long time. So I know it works with my hard drive. The libraries are stored on my laptop but I keep the files in place so I'm not making large 4K copies to my computer. All of this was groovy until, I think, I upgraded to Catalina. I can download a sound effect from youtube and upload it and add to the timeline, but I can't take an installed FCPX sound effect and drop it into the timeline without getting the alert (above).

The alert says I can choose another destination. Is that a possible fix?

Where’s the assigned media location? In the library? If you’re using the Sound Effects browser the audio is getting copied into the library. There’s permissions problem somewhere. You can’t use 10.4.4 in Catalina. I’m surprised it even opens. When you launch FCP in Catalina for the first time you should have gotten a series of dialogues to confirm multiple security preferences.

I am also getting the same error in iMovie after installing Catalina. I have the latest version 10.15.1. More than 100G is available but getting the following error while importing any media - images, mp3 etc.

"There is not enough disk space available at the selected destination. Please choose another one or clear some space."

Is this a bug? Not sure how to get around this issue.
