AppleWatch 6.1 update fails due to watch WiFi turning off

The Apple Watch update instruction are not correct. To successfully update to watchOS 6.1 from my iPhone XR I had to continue wearing my watch while my iPhone XR watch app downloads the 357MB update. When the download completes, continue wearing your watch until the Preparing update step completes. At this point the watch app will say waiting to install. Now connect your watch to the charger and the watch app will switch to the verifying update step.. while the verify step is in progress continue to hold and move your watch while it is in night stand mode. If the screen shuts down the watch WiFi also shuts down and the update will fail.

continue to rotate your watch while connected to the charger so the watch doesn’t go to sleep. As soon as the see the watch app go to the installing step, you will see the install progress indicator on your watch face, and you can now put your watch down and let the install complete.

apple please fix the Apple Watch WiFi from shutting down when in nightstand mode and allow the the update to complete per your instructions

My initial problem was that the update got hung on the verifying step. I think that what happened is that I had already gone through the downloading and preparing steps but without realizing I had done that (don't ask...just accept that's what I did! ;). and when putting the watch on the charger and trying to start the update process it got hung on the verifying step (presumably because it had lost its Wifi connection).

And at that point, I tried restarting both watch and iPhone. I put my watch back on the charger and tried to access the update via my phone, only to receive an "unable to check update" error message. That sent me back to Apple support where I found this post. After reading these instructions I realized I needed to start over, with my watch not on the charger.

Bottom line: the instructions worked perfectly! That said, it's a pain in the a*s and hopefully will be fixed by Apple. I've not had any problems with updates prior to this one and hope not to have any with future updates (not to mention, it renders the automatic update feature useless).

Oh, one other point: I'm not sure the problem is specifically tied to having the Nightstand mode enabled; my watch doesn't have that feature enabled and I still had the same problem with the update.

Yes after many attempts with the download pausing saying I wasn’t connected to WiFi. It was the watch dropping WiFi when connected to the charger in nightstand mode. And again when the verify failed when my watch went to sleep and dropped the WiFi again.

The steps I documented above resolved the install failures. Note that my iPhone XR was running iOS 13.2 and my watch 4 was running watchOS 6 at the time of the watchOS 6.1 update. The watch showed the WiFi stopped (grey) in the mini control center, my iPhone was continually connected to WiFi. It was clearly the watch going to sleep and dropping the WiFi connecting causing the update download attempts and verify to fail. This needs to get fixed
