get rid of activation lock?

How do I get out of the activation lock? Forgot my apple ID for the Ipod and now it's locked. I can obviously get on here but not on my ipod... Please help

Use Apple's iForgot service, or contact their Account Security team, or if you’re the iPod’s original owner, supply Apple with its purchase receipt and ask them to remove the lock.

Really a bummer. 65 yr old. use my ipod to play music when I'm driving. Really upsetting that Apple locks me out of my Ipod. I don't login to the apple store and cant remember Apple ID and PW. Any way to fix this or has Apple trashed my Ipod????
