iPhone 4 and Pioneer FH-P8000BT Don't Recognize Each Other

I've had a Pioneer FH-P8000BT head unit in my car for a few years now, and it's been great through the first and second (3G) versions of the iPhone. Now that I've upgraded to iPhone 4, the unit no longer connects by USB, and only sporadically through bluetooth audio. Interestingly, it connects fine through phone bluetooth, so I don't know what's going on here.
I've checked that the cabling and everything is fine, but I haven't been able to resolve the issue.
Tried resetting the head unit, resetting the phone (soft and hard) in a number of permutations, but to no avail.
Pioneer has not replied to my request for firmware update.
Has anyone had success fixing this problem? I don't seem to be the only one, as there are a number of similar threads out there ( http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11892180&tstart=0 and http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11826859&tstart=0 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2469559&start=0&tstart=0 etc.)

You are not alone. My old 3G was working fine but I can't get iPhone 4 to connect properly or automatically to BT Audio. BT Phone setup is fine but BT Audio just won't connect using the paired phone. I can get it to connect manually each time by using the 'Connection' menu but that's just not practical. I tried using my wife's 3G ( which has been upgraded to iOS4 ) and that seems to have the same problem so I think it's a problem with iOS4 rather than an issue with the phone itself. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. ( Yeah, right - just like they're going to fix the Death Grip issue ! ).

I am having the same issue. Prior to upgrading to os4 my phone worked fine. Now the phone connects fine but BT audio does not without deleting the device and totally starting over. I am now searching for a way to downgrade to the previous os. I will post back is I find a way. And contrary to some post this is an Apple issue. OS3 works OS4 does not. This radio came out over a year ago. Pioneer can not be expected to build a car stereo that is compatible with an os that was not even available for over a year after the radio came to market.

I finally got an answer from Pioneer:

"+Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics, Inc.+
+Unfortunately, there's no update for the FH-P8000BT. I've heard from other customers and we've tested, when you turn off the Iphone and turn it back on. Everything worked fine. If the problem persist, you can also do a system restore on you Iphone.+
+Thank You,+
+Customer Service Representative+"

Tried all of that, but it didn't work.
As expected, Pioneer blames the iPhone. Apple will blame Pioneer. And the customer is left without any workable solution.

I'm very happy to hear that I am not the only one having Bluetooth connection problems with my FH-P8000BT. My wife and I both own FH-P8000BT head units and we have been using our iPhones without any compatibility issues. 2 weeks ago I upgraded to OS4 and couldn't figure out why my BT audio was not working for music. When my wife upgraded her iphone, that's when I figured out what the problem was. It's the new apple software update without a doubt.
I still wonder why the phone works with the radios BT connection but the music won't work via Bluetooth? It's hard to go back to plugging my phone in every time. Apple will most likely correct the issue with the next software update. Anyone having a problem like this should post a comment so that it's a big enough problem for apple to put on their "To Fix" list.

I just spent a half hour messing with my system. Here is the result: the auto connect with BT audio is obviously faulty in the deck unit. I tried every combination of connections and even did a complete system reset of the BT radio. I was successful in getting the iPhone 4 connected only when I would go to BT AUDIO--CONNECTIONS--PAIR DEVICE--NOKIA--when it said Ready, I would (on the iPhone) push the device name under bluetooth settings and then it would connect. If you lose the connection, you have to go through that whole process again to reconnect. ANNOYING!! however, the iPhone Bluetooth works great. The new update allows me to skip songs via the BT deck, which was previously unavailable. The sound is great and all the features work wonderfully--except the pairing problem. That's why I think this is now a pioneer problem. But of course I don't know that much about all the hardware stuff. Just my opinion.

I use an old iPod connected directly most of the time, no problems with it, and my iPhone 3GS works great as a phone. I have the same problem of iTunes won't play through BT Audio... BUT I've found that if I play audio, like from the built in recorder on the iPhone, it does play through my speakers... weird...

My other question about the Pioneer FH-P8000BT is has there ever been a firmware update released for it? From what I could see on their site, I've not found any.
