Activity Monitor Repeatedly Quits after Catalina Update 10.15.1 Now, every time I open Activity Monitor I get a window saying "The last time you opened Activity Monitor, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" Regardless of whether I select "Don't Reopen" or "Reopen" Activity Monitor just quits anyway. Is there a fix?


MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) 3.5 GHz Dual i7

Hi Allen,

Thanks for your response. I managed to get Activity Monitor to reopen by deleting com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist in ~/Library/Preferences, a suggestion from r/MacOS on Reddit.


After doing that, however, every time I resize the CPU History window in Activity Monitor, the application crashes. I submitted a bug report.


If it crashes again, I'll try safe mode.

I see that you're encountering an alert indicating that Activity Monitor unexpectedly quit while reopening windows, and the alert reappears no matter which option you select in the window. I would be happy to help provide steps to take so you can open Activity Monitor again.


If you haven't already done so, I'd like to have you test if you can open Activity Monitor after restarting your Mac. If the same alert appears, test if it happens when the Mac is restarted in safe mode next:
