Apple text message app and landlines

How do I stop apple message app from listing contacts landline when I type their name into the "to field". The problem is it only shows the number behind their name and sometimes will list all phone numbers that are in their contact info so I don't know which number to select with out quoting messages and going to their contact card to see which one is an actual mobil number. The issue is consistent whether I'm using my iPhone or iMac.

Good afternoon flapbreaker,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you would like an easier way to send a text message to a contact's cell phone rather than their landline. There are a number of different ways to approach this:

When you create a card for a person in the Contact app, place the cell number at the top of list of telephone fields.

For existing contacts, use the Contacts app instead of the Messages app to open the contact card and deliberately choose which phone number to send a text message to.

For contacts that you already have ongoing conversations with, find them in the list of Messages and continue the conversation. There is no need to select the phone number again.

Here are a few resources to help you with this:

Add and use contact information on iPhone - iPhone User Guide - iOS 13

Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Send and receive text messages on iPhone - iPhone User Guide - iOS 13

Take care.
