Is it possible to use Airplay if I do not have a very smart TV or Apple TV?

I have an up to date MacBook, iPad and iPhone. Is it possible to use Airplay if I do not have a very smart TV or Apple TV? I may soon purchase the Apple + streaming service. Would that make a difference?
