You have deleted the iCloud account from system preferences > internet accounts by selecting and clicking on subtract sign , that's the reason in Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1 if you open system preferences > iCloud tap apple id the account is greyed or while installing os you did not accepted the iCloud terms and conditions and clicked at later on option .

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mh35565/mac

Set up iCloud account in internet account .

Open system preferences , click on internet accounts , select the iCloud account and click on subtract sign a pop window appears do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac before signing out ? Two options will be shown ( a ) cancel ( b ) keep a copy , so click on keep a copy .

The boxes iCloud Drive , contacts , calendars , reminders are checked by default - so click on keep a copy .Immediately click on stop updating and continue , a pop up window will appear are you sure you want to stop updating and continue with sign out ( any documents not updated to iCloud Drive , will be moved to a folder named “ iCloud Drive archive in your home folder on this Mac ) so don’t click on “ cancel “ but " click on continue with sign out .”

A pop up window will appear . Do you want to keep a copy of safari passwords on this Mac ?

( 1 ) Delete from Mac ( 2 ) cancel ( 3 ) keep on Mac .So its optional you can select keep on Mac or click on delete from Mac ( as some users write down the safari passwords in a safe place and they can autofill it again . )

It will prompt enter the Apple ID password the Apple ID address will be already written in the field , so enter your Apple ID password and click on next , a small circle will rotate , be patient .

In the internet account side bar the iCloud account will be inactive , after a while a pop up window appears do you want to merge , contacts , calendars , reminders and safari with iCloud , so click on merge .

Again after a short while a pop up window appears enter your Apple ID and password so enter the password and click on ok .

A pop up window appears to set up iCloud Keychain on this Mac , request approval from one of your other devices , using iCloud Keychain .

( a ) use code ( b ) cancel ( c ) request approval so click on use code .

Enter your six digit iCloud keychain code and click on next a sms will come to the trusted mobile number , enter your iCloud verification code that appeared in the mobile on a pop up window appeared again on the Mac and click on ok .

The keychain box will get checked , after some time option button will appear in front of it , wait for few minutes , check the box of Siri , also the box of iCloud Drive is checked , click on option button in front of it and check the box of desktops and documents it will show setting up ( a small circle will rotate ) and click on done .

Click on option button in front of keychain box your trusted country code and trusted mobile number is written .

Note : you have to be very patient when the boxes are checked , and it will take time as the apps process are running in the background .

You don’t need to sign with Apple ID and password in the location of system preferences and then click on iCloud .

Finally iCloud account is set up in system preferences - internet accounts .

You have a single Apple ID say eample1@gmail.com , now you are trying to add a mail account with iCloud services say example2@icloud.com

you have not created the id example2@icloud.com and this id you want to configure in system preferences > internet accounts .

So what you did signed out the primary only Apple ID example1@gmail.com , and then trying to add a new mail address say example3@gmail.com , this third id will not be accepted here . because you only created with web account and not created as an Apple ID .

See this article https://suhttps://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-13561

You have to set up this id as Apple ID https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204316

This point is very clear .

See this thread https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-13561

You have to click on create Apple ID and enter the credentials of example1@gmail.com like your three security questions , date of birth and this will create id say example2@icloud.com

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit System Preferences.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

A query did you deleted the Apple ID account from system preferences > internet accounts after installing Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1

Please post a screen shot of internet accounts , and click on system preferences > iCloud - post the screen shot for this also .

Make sure before posting screen shots hide your all mail address / photo use preview to hide them see this article https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/preview/prvw15636/mac

The method what I explained is if you had already an iCloud account in system preferences > internet accounts , how to delete it by clicking on subtract sign and once again establish it .

In your Mac if it was deleted by you then click on plus sign and add it ( the Apple article is posted ) , better post the screen shots .

As I have really tried to state many times, there is no iCloud icon on System Preferences. Please see the attached photos.

I clicked on the large iCloud on the right hand side, it brings up a window where you enter U/N and then P/W of which I do, and do, and do and do, it never goes anywhere.

Is the mail account created with two factor authentication say example1@icloud.com or with some gmail services , or the account is created with secondary authentication ( in which three questions and answers are created ) , have you signed out the iCloud account ? or you never created an iCloud account and only used some mail services like gmail , yahoo ...etc

Click on details what does it show .

To keep answering your questions, I do not know what happened, I may have at some point deleted something I should not have, but honestly, I don't remember. Is there any way I can maybe reset the iCloud completely in my computer and start fresh, other than a complete OS rebuild, of which I don't want to, and can't do. I use gmail, it was set up a million years ago with out two factor authentication. Again thanks for all of your help.

Click on create Apple ID as shown with red arrow in the above screen shot fill up the credentials of your primary Apple ID say example1@gmail.com and the new id has to be created as example2@icloud.com

Note : only a single Apple ID is signed in system preferences > iCloud , in your internet account the mail account for iCloud is not showing , once id is created , click on plus sign and add it in internet accounts .

Just an example screen shot .

The primary account is set with iCloud domain .

Nov 5, 2019 11:24 PM in response to GVD888

The Apple ID address can't be repeated , so click on get a free iCloud mail address ( think of a new mail address that should be in form of some short sentence and this sentence should be very uncommon , create this id with iCloud.com

Fill up the credentials .

The credentials to be filled up are of your previous Apple ID example1@gmail.com in which you added your first and last name , date of birth , correct three answers for respective questions , type the characters in the image , click on drop down arrow of country / region in front of united kingdom - select your country .

In the Apple ID field you have to fill new id ending with iCloud.com and in the last click on continue and follow upcoming steps .

NO, that did not solve the problem.... In my Internet Accounts there are just two items.

Google,

Mail, contacts, calendars & notes.

g...........@gmail.com

Game Center

Again, there is no iCloud account that I can get to, sign in to delete or anything else. If there was any non-grayed out reference anywhere to iCloud, I would have tried that. I will be glad to attach a photo of the Internet Accounts or the Apple Id icons.

In the Apple Id icon, the side contains.

Overview

Name, Phone, Email

Password & Security

Payment & Shipping

-----------------------------

iCloud ( This is grayed out )

Not signed In

Media & Purchases

g..............@gmail.com

What shall I try next. On the System Preferences there is a small red balloon with a (1) on it, which matches the same as is on the Apple Id icon.

Across from the side bar stated above, there is a yellow informational triangle next to that the statement [ Start Using iCloud ].

Next to that is a button stating [ Start Using iCloud ]. Pressing that button takes me to the forever loop, stating enter U/N, Enter P/W, repeat until very tired.

No, it did not work. I thank you all for trying to help, and I will do whatever is required, but I still have the problem. I located the .plist, moved it to desktop, it was no longer in the library. Shut down computer, and restarted iMac Pro. When it came back on, was really excited, as the red balloon with the (1) was not on the System Preferences icon. Opened up System Preferences, located Apple ID, ( which also had no red balloon ), and tried to [ Start Using iCloud ]. Same thing, enter U/N, enter P/W, repeat. Wheel spins for a second or two the back to enter U/N etc..... Removed the newly created .plist, moved the one on the desktop back. Powered down, restarted, and red balloon is back in System Preferences. What next? Again thanks for all the replies and help.

Open system preferences , click on internet accounts , select the iCloud account and click on subtract sign a pop window appears do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac before signing out ? Two options will be shown ( a ) cancel ( b ) keep a copy , so click on keep a copy . ] There is no iCloud icon to set up an account. Thanks Guy

After that which Apple ID are you trying to sign in is it with same secondary authentication account and the same mail address used , when secondary authentication is converted into 2 FA it can be reverted back ( that is it could be once again changed into secondary authentication , but that process is done before 14 days ) , after 14 days the id is converted into 2FA permanently , that used to work on Mac OS mojave , I have not tried in Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1

In very short which apple id are you trying to sign in -

( a ) as a secondary authentication id

( b ) or 2FA account id

( c ) Do the gmail address / account is activated on gmail servers or it is deleted permanently from the server .

Please clarify it .

I only have one ( 1 ) Apple ID. It is the same one that I have to use every time I reply to your questions. I only have one Apple ID and I always enter it correctly and only one password that I always enter correctly and it does a few seconds of a round wheel and then goes right back to the enter the user name again.
