I no longer use Safari because it has become corrupted

I no longer use Safari because it has become corrupted. I keep getting an odd looking update for Safari which is think is a scam since it is my understanding that Safari cannot be updated alone and can only be updated with an OS update. Is this correct?

For the last several years, Apple has adhered to supporting the current shipping operating system, and the two previous major releases. Right now, the oldest release of macOS to receive Security (and Safari) updates is High Sierra (10.13.6). I just updated to Safari 13.0.3 on it yesterday on High SIerra.

If your are using Sierra (10.12.6) or older, there will be no Safari updates, and you will need a currently supported, non-Apple browser to maintain security currency with financial institutions, and websites that require it. Firefox 70.0.1 or Brave are good choices to maintain browser security on older releases of macOS — provided you confirm the minimum requirements for these browsers.

That's odd because the Malwarebytes site showed macOS 10.10 or later today.

Check menu : About This Mac panel. What is in the parenthesis regarding your Mac model description. You use that date nomenclature (e.g. Late 2013) to check your hardware compatibility with OS X El Capitan, and if you have it, there is a link on that page to the El Capitan upgrade on the Mac App Store.

Perform a last Time Machine backup of Yosemite (10.10) before you upgrade, and verify that your printer/scanner and applications are all compatible with the upgrade.

I'm using El Capitan which I know is old. So it looks like the Safari update I keep getting is a scam. I had to quit using Safari on my iMac because windows of junk kept opening. Now I get this stupid pop up screen and safari is trying to open on its own. The only way to stop it is to Force Quit. Annoying but I'll have to live with it as updating to current OS isn't an option. I'm running too many old programs like Adobe Suite 5.0 to do volunteer work. Thanks for verifying.

I just realized that the computer I'm having a problem with isn't El Capitan. It is Yosemite. I'd love to upgrade it to El Capitan but can't figure out how. I know all my software works with that OS because that's what is on my MacBook. Anyway Malwarebytes for Mac doesn't work on Yosemite. Thank you for the suggestion though and if you know of any other fix, please let me know.
