Purple screen since Catalina 10.15.1

Hello, all,

After updating to the latest, my screen has acquired a purple or magenta tint. I have tried restarting to no avail.

As this is a Mac mini, it is connected to an LG monitor. I don't think it's the monitor, as I plugged it into my Macbook Pro using the same HDMI cable and the monitor worked properly. (I do not have another monitor to try the Mac mini with.)

Any ideas? Perhaps reverting to a previous macOS? Thanks!

Hello. Original poster here.

The Mac mini worked with another monitor, the monitor worked with another computer, and the cable also worked elsewhere. The problem was combining all three.

The solution? Not using the HDMI port on the monitor. Seriously, that fixed it. I used an adapter to plug the same cable into the monitor's old-school DIV port (I think that's what it's called).

So I can only conclude that this is a weird bug due to the Mac OS not knowing how to deal with the ancient monitor. HDMI-to-HDMI just didn't work. None of the fancy resets did anything. Just plugging into a different port.

Hope this helps!

So I ended up connecting an old Toshiba tv to the Mac mini and it worked.

To make a comparison picture I connected a usb c hub with an hdmi port and connected the lg to that, and viola, the screen is normal. Now I had two working screens and I switched around a couple times. The lg screen works only with thee usb c hub. Somehow it is the solution to my problem, but still have no idea why this worked.

Hello carlosmb,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you updated the Mac mini and now it shows a purple screen. Since the monitor works as expected on another computer, I would recommend you use this article to help troubleshoot the issue.

Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2014 (Intel Iris only) + HP 24es (firmware RIM232) over HDMI + macOS Catalina 10.15.2.

After waking up from standby (or screen standby) - purple tint on the whole screen (other colors are visible, so rest of the picture is intact). Works normally after clean reboot or turn off/turn on monitor for a brief second.

Tint appears on around 50% of wake ups.

This combination of hardware worked flawlessly for the last two years. Problems appeared after clean install Catalina in place of 10.14.

Hi all.

I have the exact same issue here (Mac mini 2018, lg monitor via hdmi).

But neither NVRAM nor SMC reset worked so far. after the nvram reset the apple logo appears normal, but as soon as it turns to the log in screen, my screen is freakin' purple again.

So I checked if the apple logo on start up would alway appear normal/white. But it doesn't. If I just reboot, it is purple as well. So the NVRAM reset does something, but doesn't fix the issue.

I tried different colour profiles as well as creating my own colour profile. Nothing worked so far. Next will be trying a different screen or just reinstalling Mojave. any tips are highly appreciated.
