Installing legacy Java SE 6 runtime on OS Catalina

We recently upgraded to OS Catalina and when I tried to open my financial software I was told I needed to install legacy Java SE 6 runtime. I've had to do this in the past and figured it was not an issue. Well, I cannot get it to work this time. I've followed the 2 different sets of instructions I've found for uninstalling Java and none seem to work. Therefore when I try to install the legacy version I get an error message that it cannot be installed because a newer version exists on the drive. Has somebody else solved this issue?
