Hello EjMLowndes.

Start with this for general tips on managing iCloud storage.

Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

You can directly see what is taking up space in iCloud by logging in to iCloud.com from a computer. There is a Photos app there that will show you exactly what is taking up space in terms of photos. Important note: When you delete photos from your device, they go into an album called Recently Deleted. This is a safety mechanism and photos in that album auto-delete after 30 days. You can access that album and anything deleted from there will be deleted from iCloud immediately.

You also mention documents. At Settings > [your name] > iCloud, you may also want to check to see if iCloud Drive is enabled.

Cheers.

Hello EjMLowndes and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you have a question about seeing and deleting photos from iCloud Photos.

Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

You can either access iCloud.com via a computer and delete photos directly or, if you use iCloud Photos on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, deleting the photos you see in the Photos app will delete them both from the device and from iCloud. That works in the other direction as well. Deleting photos from iCloud.com, will result in them being deleted from devices using the iCloud Photos service.

Cheers.

I got Mt a message from Apple that my iCloud storage was almost full and did I want to up my plan, which I did not. So, I removed all the pictures on my phone to an external hard drive. I don’t have many documents because I still do that on my large PC and store them in another external hard drive. I keep very little on my computers, one PC and one Mac.

After I removed 3,247 photos of my phone, I checked my storage under the iCloud under settings. Two days later I get another notice that my storage is almost full. I always remove my photos to the external hard drives, do does the cloud keep copies or better yet, how can I see what is in the cloud.
