How to transcribe video files to text

Hello there, I am transcribing a video file into text for an assignment and looking for a quicker way other than viewing the file in VLC, slowing down the text and typing fast. I have tried the dictation feature in my Mac book by saying it outloud and it typing for me. The first technique seems to be better. but it is taking me hours. Does anyone have any recommendations or perhaps apps that can transcribe immediately? Would be mighty grateful for any tips.
