Click on the link to read how to "Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" --> https://support.apple.com/HT204204 - When you try to update you will only be given one update selection which will be the highest available iOS version supported by your device. If it says no update is available and you need a higher version you will have to buy newer equipment. Using this method is how you yourself can immediately find out what the current highest available version is for any device you own.

Since everybody else will immediately spoon-feed you your answer, I'll beat them to it and say an iPad third gen cannot update beyond iOS 9.3.5 and the current is iOS 13, so the one-word answer to your question is "No." For the iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular you can update to iOS 9.3.6 but this is a minor update to deal with a GPS issue.

Please provide me with useful feedback. What was not helpful about my post? I even boiled the entire answer down to "No." I really am curious because rather than post a long list of all iOS versions I directly replied to your question and provided a "teach you how to fish" method and then a "give you a fish" reply. I am just 100% perplexed and this is just one of several cases where this has happened to metoday alone which is making me question my effectiveness on this forum. Or was it you just decided to only take notice of the last-posted reply when you made your subsequent reply?

The 3rd gen is from March 2012 and it cannot run anything newer than iOS 9.3.5 (9.3.6 for cellular), your device is too old and the hardware is incapable with anything newer.

1st gen (2010): 5.1.1

2nd gen (2011) / 3rd gen (2012): 9.3.5/9.3.6

4th gen (2012): 10.3.3 / 10.3.4

iPad Air 1st gen (2013): 12.4.3

iPad Air 2 (2014): 13.2 (latest)

iPad 5th/6th/7th gen/Air 3 (2017 - 2019): 13.2 (latest)

  • Less Security (Exploits are not fixed, primarily when using Web/Safari) When critical, Apple may still patch it.

  • Missing Features that Apple introduced in more recent iOS versions

  • And most important: Inability to download Apps from the App Store.

After a couple years most Apps in the App Store require for example atleast iOS 10 or 11, and your device can't update to that. Usually this happens after 2 years, most Apps as of Late 2019 require iOS 11, while the current version is iOS 13.

You may be better off with a new iPad, Apple does support their devices for many years. But since the iPad 3rd gen is from Early 2012, it only supports iOS 9.3.x which released in August 2016
