Syncing Documents on Mac in iCloud over an unsercure Wifi connection

Hello, If I want to sync documents in iCloud through an unsecured Wifi connection, will those documents automatically be encrypted in transit or is it necessary to encrypt them myself before doing the sync? I've considered using a VPN but am put off by the slowdown in transfer speeds.

You should never connect the Mac with unsecured wifi connection , see the paragraph security in this article https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT202068

If your security is set to None or unsecured mode, you're using no authentication or encryption. Anyone can join your Wi-Fi network, use your Internet connection, access any shared resource on your network, and read any traffic you send over the network. Using an unsecured network is not recommended.

The documents created on iCloud are encrypted as you had an admin account and in users and groups automatic login is off , but for that you must never use insecure network .

Public wifi are not secured , you don't know about their securities they might be not be using WPA2 personal AES settings and no passwords are set up , they are avoided any kind of entry though network can occur , thats the reason users secure their internet service provider router by creating a password and do the settings as automatic , the Mac users at home also configure air port express , create base station passwords for securities .
