Spike in mobile data usage on iPhone

Twice in the past couple of weeks I have experienced big spikes in data usage on my iPhone 8 (around 400MB each time I estimate). Both times this has caused my available data to drop to 0, then has drained my prepaid account of all funds as it uses casual data. Each time it happened I was completely unaware, and not using my phone. When I check my Mobile Data in Settings, the main 2 culprits are both in System Services:

  1. Home Screen
  2. iTunes Media Services

I now have zero confidence that I can go out and have mobile data switched on. I will turn it on briefly to check emails etc, then straight back off. Even in that short time (less than a minute), Home Screen and iTunes Media Services will rack up over 10MB each.

In addition, it has also caused me to notice that "Uninstalled Apps" are using data too (and yes, I have reset my statistics and not uninstalled any apps since the reset). I have seen this issue reported elsewhere, and it seems really dodgy that this could be happening. Though this is a much smaller issue than above in terms of amount of data used.

Well, you probably have some additional pertinent information you have not shared with us regarding iTunes Media Services.

Some possibilities:

  • Do you subscribe to Apple Music?
  • Do you subscribe to iTunes Match?
  • How do you sync music - if you do so?
  • How do you deal with album artwork?

We would need details about all your iTunes behavior to provide meaningful assistance.
