How to import my iphoto library into photo now that my iphoto doesn't work anymore with the upgrade to Catalina?

Simple: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your iPhoto Library. It will do the rest.

the curating will rake a long time, if the library is large and start again, when er you import new photos, delete photos, or change the favorites. it took three weeks to complete for my library, and started again a few hours later, but you can quit Photos, no problem .
Where is the library? On your internal disk? On an external? If external what format is it?
Thank you Terence, it worked but now in the conversion process it has been stuck on "Gathering Favorites, Analyzing Scenes, Detecting Duplicates, Composing Layout, Curating Best Photos" for a few DAYS now. Seems to be stuck at about 25% complete. Afraid to stop it for fear of corrupting my file but can't let it continue eternally.
