I can’t sign into one of my original iPads

So the old iPad has an Apple ID that no longer exist. I followed the directions to change Apple ID on the old iPad and then I restarted it. I put the passcode in but it asked me to sign in with the original Apple ID again. What to do?

if you are the original owner, take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store.
