Preview Save As PDF error message “error while printing” after Catalina

Since upgrading to Catalina, including the supplemental update and then again after 10.15.1 update, I am having issues using Preview to “Save As PDF” — I get the error message “error while printing.” See below my detailed account of this issue:

• 2019-11-05 Preview app Save As PDF issue in Catalina 10.15.1 - using Preview to Save As PDF stopped working - I get repeated “error while printing” message when attempting to save jpegs or screenshots as PDF. It did not work after initial install of Catalina and even after the supplemental update, but after update 10.15.1 it worked briefly. It works in Safari. After restart of iMac it didn’t work. Then I did a full shut down of the iMac and started it again - this time it worked once. A 2nd attempt to Save As PDF on the same images that had just work seconds ago, did not work. I created a new Test user “standard” login account, attempted to Save As PDF and again got the same error message “Error While Printing”

• 2019-10-25 PREVIEW application issue in Catalina 10.15 with supplemental update - SAVE AS PDF ISSUE - opened files in Preview, selected "save as" PDF I get an error message "error while printing" since upgrading to Catalina (including the supplemental update). I've tested various files on my iMac and also on an external hard drive - jpegs, screen shots, scanned documents - ranging from a single image to 23 images opened in Preview>Save As>PDF and always get the same error message "error while printing." Never had this issue before upgarding to Catalina 10.15. I've checked my "permissions" in Finder for example on files on my Desktop and it says "read and write" so I'm assuming it's not a Permissions issue. I've submitted this bug report to Apple Feedback - MacOS. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING A TEMPORARY FIX: A workaround is to go up to the Preview "File" menu and select "Export as PDF" but note that this reduces the final file size considerably (from a 100MB file of 23 images to 4MB) - so if you need it to remain a high quality image, do not use this. To further test the original issue, I created a Temp user with standard permissions and tried to Save As a PDF of a single screen shot on my Desktop and I got the same error message “error while printing.” 2019-10-25 I just spoke to Apple upper level tech support and was told this is a known issue and Apple is working on a fix.

I had this same issue appear for me, and ended up finding that when the print dialog is open under Preview, I select a different printer from my list (even though I'm going to Save as PDF). Then it worked fine with no issues. Why this works, I have no idea. For me I selected an AirPrint printer from my list. Hope this helps.

Thank you Seth486 - your suggestion worked - I only have 2 printers in my dialogue box, a Canon and an Epson - but only the Canon is "on" and in regular use, so I selected the Epson which was not even turned "on" and then did the Save As PDF and it worked. Which lead to me think maybe even though I'm not printing, that somehow my Canon printer, (which works just fine as a printer), maybe the printer's driver is causing some issue - so, I deleted this printer and added it back in (there were 2 options for this printer - a Canon series or Canon Bonjour - I selected the Bonjour driver option and attempted to do what I initially had issues with - select a series of images that I wanted to Save As PDF and proceeded as I normally would and it worked just fine - odd, but will see if this continues to work.

In response to jblanchard1 - I am not sure what you meant by "vendor" driver? I only see access to printer drivers for printers that my iMac has access to, which are the 2 printers I own - a Canon and an Epson (currently my Canon is the default in my dialogue box). Seth486 suggested choosing another printer than the one currently in the dialogue box, and thankfully my Epson printer which is not turned on, but visible in dialogue box, was selectable, then I proceeded to Save As PDF and it worked. Your Safari suggestion works for individual images being opened and saved as PDF, but I didn't see a way to conveniently combine a series of images this way. But I appreciate your suggestion.

no -- that is what is odd, when I followed Seth486's suggestion to select another printer, and I selected the turned off Epson and that worked, but that printers is OLD and is not an AirPrint printer. And when I deleted my Canon and added it back, I saw 2 options - Canon MG7700 Series and Canon MG7700 Bonjour... so I tried the Bonjour this time and as you said, in Sys Prefs under "kind" for the printer it does say AirPrint. My guess is the other driver option is not AirPrint and was causing the issue, but this issue is new - I had no issues before Catalina with either printer or Preview Save As PDF. Or maybe just deleting the printer and adding it back got rid of the bug causing the issue - I really don't know. Anyway, it seems fixed for now.

I am working on my iMac, in Catalina 10.15.1 -- the printer driver in Sys Prefs does say "Kind: Canon model# Series-AirPrint" -- how do I add the printer via AirPrint? I added the printer in Sys Prefs>Printers & Scanners> add or delete printer from the options the iMac sees that are available to it. Not sure I'm understanding how to add it as an AirPrint printer, I think it's just whatever printers that the iMac and Catalina see available - I don't think I manually downloaded this printer's driver to my iMac if that is what you meant?

Sorry, I added the earlier reply before I saw your comment.

If the printer supports AirPrint, AddPrinter automatically selects AirPrint in the Use menu, and the added printer has the "-AirPrint" suffix in the Printer & Scanners pref pane. Vendor drivers are the software for the printers that the printer manufacturers write. If you have vendor drivers installed, you can add the printer with the vendor driver by selecting it in the Use menu - the added printer doesn't have the "-AirPrint" suffix.

Yes, Safari is not the way to combine pdf documents.

Your Epson printer was added using AirPrint, right?

If being an AirPrint printer is the fix, my first printer, the Canon, which was giving me issues, is an AirPrint printer - so I'm not sure how related these issues are, but I appreciate your help either way and I will keep it in mind if the issue rears its ugly head again - I will say after the 10.15.1 update initially this issue was resolved, then within minutes of it working, it stopped working without any change on my part - so this issue could come back.

It's insanity that after 2 Catalina updates this glaring problem is still not solved. That being said, here is a workaround:

1) Open System Preferences

2) Open Printers & Scanners

3) Under the list of printers on the left, click the + symbol to add a printer

4) Click the IP tab at the top left

5) Fill in the window with these value:

Address: 127.0.0.1

Protocol: Select "AirPrint" from the dropdown menu

Queue: Leave blank

Name: Choose a name of your choice. I recommend "PDF Printer"

Location: Leave blank

Use: Select "AirPrint" from the dropdown menu

6) You will get a pop up saying "Unable to verify printer on your network. Would you still like to create the printer?" Click Continue

7) Open the file(s) in Preview that you wish to save as a PDF.

8) Click File, Print, then select the printer you just added ("PDF Printer"), then select Save As PDF

Ridiculous that we have to go through all of this to maintain a basic function of Preview, but this works.
