Time Machine stuck on "freeing space" all day

The only Catalina problem I have encountered so far is that I haven't been able to do a backup since upgrading to the new system. Everything has been functioning very well I am pleased to report. My Time Capsule is pretty full but Mojave used to clean up old backups and write a new backup. Anything I can do to get it going again?

Had a similar issue. Was using a network attached Drive for Time machine. Time machine stopped working after Catalina. After a day of busy!!! Network Router started sending messages to my phone that the drive had failed. Hooked drive up locally to Mac. Cleaned it - Ran Disk Utility fix. Came back clean but still would not work on Network.

The fix was to delete all devices from my Apple Network.

Reset the Router and attach the drive as Network drive again. Rebooted Mac. All works.

Hope this helps. Mike
