Giving a checkbox numerical value

Can I give checkboxes a numerical value? I am trying to create a new payroll spreadsheet and I want to use checkboxes. If I click a checkbox I want it to represent like 8 hours and if I don't I want it to represent 0 and then I want it to total the value at the end. Is that possible in numbers? If so can someone please tell me how.
