Airpods won't play media, only phone calls

I got new airpods and they will only play phone calls. They do not play any type of media, like podcasts, music, shows, movies, etc.

The airpods are connected, charged, clean, and the volume is turned up. I know this because I can hear phone calls just fine. When I play a podcast, for example, the app shows the podcast is playing, but sound is not coming from either the airpods or the phone itself.

I have tried restarting the phone the airpods are connected to. I have tried repairing the airpods. I have tried disconnecting the airpods. I have tried turning off/on bluetooth. I have tried resetting the airpods.

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. I understand from your message that you’re unable to hear any audio though your AirPods other than phone calls.

Since the issue is occurring with other apps, but not with the phone calls, that tells me that your AirPods are connected correctly to your iPhone. The next step is to check and see what audio source is selected in your apps.

Check out the information in this article for how you can select the audio source by tapping the AirPlay icon within the apps: How to AirPlay audio. Be sure that the AirPods are selected for the audio source.
