I recently experienced a Pages error "The document 'document name' cannot be opened." My MacBook Air is running Catalina 10.15.1 Any ideas?

Does the dialog state that the file is damaged and cannot be opened, or the more terse the file cannot be opened? Where is the Pages document located, and has it ever been stored in Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive, or a Windows filesystem?
D’oh! Resolved after a machine shutdown and restart!

No, it says nothing about a damaged file, just what I typed. I cannot open any Pages document since the update to Catalina OS X 10.15.1
While on this subject I can add that Numbers is also failing to open existing files.
The problem seems to exist only for iCloud documents; local files open OK.
I’m seeing this unexplained error in pages on 10.15.1.
Can you explain how this is resolved, please
