My keyboard and trackpad on my MacBook laptop has stopped working. Now the MacBook will only work with and external keyboard and mouse? I've tried resetting the Mac back to the factory settings and still having the same issue.
When both the keyboard and trackpad stop working at the same time it usually indicates a hardware issue. I've seen this happen with 2015 model MBPro, but I am unsure of the actual cause as it can sometimes be resolved by replacing the Trackpad cable. Restarting and SMC resets can sometimes temporarily get it to work again.
I have the same exact issue. Going to Genius Bar tomorrow but I have a feeling its software related and something to do with the "relocated items" folder that Catalina added. Theres a file in there named something like "masterpassword_default" and I get a weird welcome screen on reboot with something about a master password. Let me know if you hear anything before I go to Genius Bar. Hardware test sent by earlier user passed fully...
Took my Mac to an authorized service tech. When I described the issue the tech immediately knew what the problem was. If your Power button is still working but the rest of the keyboard and trackpad isn't working, which was my issue, the tech told me that there is a cable that links the keyboard with the trackpad that is bad. This is separate from the power button and if the power button doesn't work then the top case needs to be replaced. He said that the bad cable is a common issue with the 2015 MacBook but only with the 13 in screen. Cost was around $150 total to replace the cable and computer is working fine again. Hope this helps anyone else with this issue.
