What is the exact model of your laptop? You can get this information by entering your serial number here or here.

What version of macOS are you running and which version are you trying to install?

How are you installing the macOS upgrade? From within macOS, Recovery Mode, or macOS USB installer?

Do you have an internal drive installed?

Do you have a third party SSD installed and if so what is the make & model?

I have the same issue.

The mac was set to do auto updates and upon restart if the machine i have the same issue as the OP.

Do you have a good working original Apple drive installed internally?

You can try running the update from Safe Mode.
