Samsung 970 Evo SSD upgrade on Late 2013 MacBook Pro

Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my MacBook pro late 2013’s SSD to Samsung Evo 970. What I have done so far is:

  • Downloaded MacOS Catalina
  • Created a bootable USB Installer for MacOS
  • Backed up Mac using Time Machine to an external hard drive
  • Installed Samsung Evo 970 SSD using Sintech adapter (removed battery plug prior to changing the SSD)
  • Booted the Mac using the bootable USB
  • Erased the new SSD and set the format to APFS
  • Select option from the menu “restore from Time Machine” and plugged in the external drive where are backed up my data
  • Restore starts
  • Crashes after 11GB!!!!!!!!

I repeated the process 5 times. Still the same. Please advise!

Regards,

Zain

H Zain,

Somebody on eBay listed some SSD (NVMe) upgrades for Mac with updated latest “drivers”, claiming the compatibility with 10.15 Catalina. I don't know if they are correct about it and there are different adapters but I came across another eBay seller who is selling a “highest quality” M.2 NGFF AHCI NVMe SSD M Key Converter Adapter for MacBook 2013-2017 12+16Pin US. He told me when I chatted with him that his adapter works fine under Catalina. However, he says in his listing:

4. In MacBook 2013 2014 2015, we suggest fixing Sansung SM951 SM961 PM961 960EVO PRO HP EX900 EX920 Lexar NM600 Intel 760 ect.(Sansung 981 and Intel 760P are not supported)

5. In MacBOOK 2015 2017, there is no problem for Sansung 970 evo pro and Liteon T10.

He clearly misspelled “Samsung” but based on his listing you might want to try Samsung 960 EVO to see if it is really about compatibility issue between the adapter and the 970 EVO on your model.

Hopefully this help.

Cheers,

Hannu
