Hey All,

Since I bought an iPhone 7 recently, I found that my iPad could text to those who don't have apple devices. Texting people on iPad is more comfortable for me, so I am getting shared data monthly plan - 2.5G with unlimited text (sharing data with iPhone and iPad).

When I am on WiFi, if I text who doesn't have Apple devices on my iPad, my mobile data still goes away, hey? If so, would hat make any difference as I hear texting data is small amount? Or, would it be free since I have unlimited text on my monthly plan?

Your iPad is not a cellular telephone. It cannot text non-Apple devices, regardless of whether it has cellular data or not.

The only way an iPad can communicate text messages to/from a non-Apple device is by using Apple’s Handoff capability to send/receive those messages using your iPhone.

The texting will be done using the iPhone. So I suppose that will be free to you. But of course data is flowing between the iPad and iPhone. Somehow that is done under your auspices.

When data is flowing between the iPhone and iPad, is this free if I turn on Apple' hand-off capability?

Would there be a need to have sharing data in my plan, in order to use that capability? I don't have mobile plan on my iPad but have prepay plan for the phone. Prepay plan doesn't have sharing data but will it still work as prepay also has unlimited text? I originally thought sharing data is needed because if I hospot (if required) the phone with iPad to use the capability, then I cannot do my writing work or Facebook as they take a lot of data. But is hotspot needed to use that capability if I don't have sharing data in my plan?

I don’t really understand your question.

One example is you mention Facebook without telling us if it’s on the iPhone or iPad.

Another example is you have not told us about Wi-FI - whether you use it, what its source is, etc.

The bottom line is if it’s of value, you should expect to pay for it.

Sorry for confusing you - my question is indeed confusing even for me, haha!

My question is:

Is hotspot or sharing data between iPhone and my iPad needed to use the capability?

If hotspot is required all the time, it is better to have sharing data in my plan as I use my iPad for other things as well and hotspot is not wiFi. Although I am sure that sharing data allows to have WiFi, have to check it with mobile company.

I don’t know what “the capability” means. Maybe you’re back to inquiring about texting from an iPad. If so, the iPad and iPhone must communicate to each other as prescribed by Handoff requirements.

Then you have a passage about Hotspot that I also cannot understand. Hotspot is one of several ways to provide Wi-FI.

Hey,

i think this is all solved about SMS message and Apple’s handoff capability.

but just wondered about MMS messages now. Does it take mobile data away to any phone, even if I have unlimited text on my monthly plan, or just with those who don’t have an iPhone? Even on WiFi network?

It seems like data has been taken off but can’t remember whether I was on wifi or not.

Yeah, if use that capability and text who doesn't have Apple devices on my iPad, do you mean that I can use my iPad, instead of the iPhone, and since iPhone has unlimited text, will it be for free?
