cannot login to osx

I am posting this on behalf of a friend. He has an old Mac running Snow Leopard which he hasn't used in a while. He had forgotten his Apple password so went online using another device to reset it. This worked fine as he is now able to log into his account on iCloud. However he still cannot log into his Mac. I am not an OSX user myself but am assuming that because he has not yet logged in, it is not connecting to the internet (even though it is connected) so is not aware of his new password. Is this correct and if so what can he do to regain access to the Mac?
