Logic Pro X not recognizing input on Catalina - AirPods?

I was going to do a quick record of a story for my kids and opened Logic Pro X for the first time since updating to Catalina. I put in my AirPods, selected them as the IO devices and went to record. I got the error "no input selected" and went to the strip to check that the input was set properly. But I was given no option. On the strip I could only select "No Input" or a bus, which wasn't appropriate.

I tried several times, creating new projects and opened GarageBand to see if it behaved the same. It did - "no input" there as well and no option to select one.

If I disconnect the AirPods, I can record in LPX using the built in mic. Obviously this is a low quality recording and OK for the kids story; but the AirPods usually capture less room noise. Is there an issue/fix for working with AirPods on Catalina? Thanks for any help. Pics and stats below.

Interesting question...

What I would try is to create an aggregate device in Audio Midi Setup with only the Airpods Mic/In as a subdevice. Give it a name and select the aggregate device as the Input Device in Logic.

Ah! I forgot about that. Voice/Mic Bluetooth devices use a low quality profile in order to keep it "synchronous"; then the 16 kHz sample rate which is not recognized by Logic. I don't have Airpods handy to experiment but the idea is to try to set the device at a sample rate like 44,1 kHz.

You may try to record with QuickTime and then import in Logic.

Hi WD,

Thank you so much for the reply. I am just getting back to troubleshooting. I did as you suggested; but got no luck. I used the AudioMIDI setup to create an aggregate input. Then I went into Logic and selected it in the Audio preferences. I still get the same No Input Selected error without any useful options to change anything at the track level either. Pics below.

Ha. The only problem with you answer is I should have thought of that myself. I have done some screen records for demos with QT. That is the simplest solution no doubt.

Just as an FYI, the aggregate device with the increase sample rate still popped an error. Even though I had aggregated the AirPods and a USB mic I didn't have connected at the moment, LPX seemed to recognize it was just getting a 16kHz sample.
