macOS Catalina software update isn't showing as a software update for my Mac, why?

I have macOS High Sierra and macOS Catalina software update isn't showing as a software update for my Mac. I've checked pending downloads, checked my computer for software updates, but not sure what I can do get the new software. Any ideas on how to get the update when it's not showing in my App store?

Going to Catalina (10.15) from High Sierra (10.13) or Mojave (10.14) is not an update, it is referred to an upgrade.

First of all, do not do such an upgrade without a solid backup. Have an up to date Time Machine backup.

And make a full bootable clone of your system drive to a separate hard drive.

To upgrade, just go to the App Store, search for Catalina and click Install.
