old mac password forgotten

I have a 2009 Mac Bool Pro and the computer was used by my son for college and I can't get in because he doesn't remember the password. Was trying to wipe the computer and reinstall the OS, but after Command- R the opening screen is the sign in screen.

Thanks,

If you have a regular login in screen after using Command + R, then it did not boot into Recovery Mode.

If you have another Mac, then you can try creating a bootable macOS USB installer.
