Unable to login after reboot

My iMac OS Catalina does not accept my login passord after reboot. After entering the userid and password, the system claims it has been shutdown accidentely, which is not the case, it was shutdown with the shutdown command. The system tries to restart by itself, but the same happens over and over again and I am not able to login.
