Can I use a more powerful adapter than the 87W that comes with the 15" Macbook Pro?

When I play graphically intensive games, the power draw is higher than what the 87W charger can provide. This leads to the battery slowly decreasing, until after a few hours I get a low battery notification and I have to stop until it charges up again. While I'm currently unaware of any options, would it be safe to use a USB-C charger rated at higher than 87W so that I don't get this battery drain, or would the computer only receive 87W regardless of the adapter?
