Photographs in Recent vs Photos?

Why are "all" my photos visible in the Recent album (on both the iMac and iPhone, streamed through the iCloud) but they don't appear in the "All Photos, Days, Months or Years" on the iPhone or in the "Photo" library folder on my iMac.

Not just 1 or 2 photos, I'm referring to 293 as that is the difference between the number of photos in 'Recent' and 'Photos'. (Obviously, when looking at my iPhone, usually the device I take all my photographs with, says that all images are updated i.e. Update Just Now).

For example, I took consecutive photos of an Indigenous Elder making a boomerang (3 days ago).

One (1) image appears in Photos and all 5 appear in the Recent album and strange enough, it's the 4th photo in the sequence that appears in Photos.

I'm puzzled!

Are you using iCloud Photos?

And where are you looking for the number of photos?

The "Days, Month, Years" are only showing a curated selection of your photos - the photos that have been picked by Photos as the most important photos and videos in your library. These views are not supposed to be showing all photos. You will not be seeing all photos in "Days, Month, Years".

  • The Recents album is showing you the photos added to your library sorted by the date they have been added.
  • The All Photos album is showing you all photos in your library, sorted by the date they have been taken.

On my Mac the number of photos and videos is identical in "Recents" and "All Photos". As a test - select all items with ⌘A and compare the numbers of items. Select the Photos in both views separately, when you compare the numbers. And make sure that the "Showing" filter in the upper right corner is set to "All Items".

The Recents Count:

The "All Photos" Count:

If you should be using iCloud Photos, you may be seeing photos in Recents, before they are appearing in All Photos. Then you will have to wait a bit, the photos will appear in All Photos as well.
