SSD vs. new Mac

Hi, my 2014 Mini Mac is slowing down, so I first thought of buying a new 2018 model. Then I thought an external SSD drive would be sufficient. My questions are: is that true? Can I connect an SSD drive to the old Mac? If the answers are yes, any suggestions and recommendations in regard to model, size, etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it's probably good idea. My Mac Mini (Late 2012) is working much better with SSD rather than with HDD that I had before.

Exact model of my SSD is Western Digital Green SSD 240GB 2.5" SATA 3.

You may get one with more or less capacity depends on your needs.
