Connecting my MacBook Air to a Samsung Smart TV

How do I connect my MacBook Air (macOS Catalina, Version 10.15) to a Samsung Smart TV? When I try to connect I only get sound. No picture. My computer has a Thunderbolt port and two USB ports. I bought a cable I thought had a Thunderbolt connection but it might be a Mini Display connecter. Is there a difference?

You have two different questions in your post.

  1. How do I connect my computer to my TV? Use 4K displays, 5K displays, and Ultra HD TVs with your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Are Thunderbolt and Mini-Display different? https://www.journaldulapin.com/2012/12/12/thunderbolt-and-mini-displayport-differences-and-compatibility/
