IPod Shuffle - Steady Red Light

Hi, My son just got a brand new 2GB iPod 4th Generation yesterday. Second hand from a lady that bought it years ago and never used it. I was helping him set it up for the very first time. Opened the packaging, plugged it in to my iMac, iTunes recognized it right away.

It started the charging process, I updated it to the latest update, and I started syncing with songs. I walked away to get a snack, came back to a dead iPod. No lights, no blinks, no life. The iMac told me that the "disc was not ejected properly" as well. iTunes will no longer recognize the iPod on the iMac, my Macbook, or my Mac Pro. It will no longer charge on any of the computers.

I have exhausted every option I have read in the manual, Googling, YouTube, etc. I have tried to reset, tried multiple USB cords, ports, etc. to no avail.

All that is left is I have it plugged into a wall charger, and if I unplug it, then plug it back in for the count of 5, then unplug, repeat until I get a solid red light. It has been at the solid red light for 15 hours or more with no change. I take it off to test, and still nothing. No other colors, no blinking, just one steady red light.

Should I leave this on here for 24 hours, a couple of days, or? All was well at the start, so I do not know what happened. My only bad is that I did have it plugged into my Apple keyboard USB port. I have done this with my other iPod Shuffle for 8+ years with no issues at all. It is the same generation 2GB, even the very same Blue.

I hate to think that this brand new iPod Shuffle is as dead as a doornail already.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey DWDDoolittle,

I understand you're having an issue with your iPod shuffle because it turned off when you were syncing, and now won't turn back on again.

Because the iPod shuffle will not turn on, you'll need to follow these steps here: If your iPod won't turn on or seems frozen - Apple Support. If you're still unable to get the iPod shuffle to turn on, you'll want to Contact Apple Support directly for further help.

Have a great day.

Thanks. Have been through every step possible with the iPod Shuffle, and have contacted Apple Support. It being a "vintage" product there is nothing that can be done through Apple Support. Protocol in the past was to send the iPod Shuffle in for service, but there was no actual servicing of the iPod Shuffle, but only replacement of the iPod Shuffle. Those days are now over. I suppose that they do not change the batteries in these.

I went frome a 5V Wall Charger to a 12V Wall Charger, and the only change is that I got the steady red light faster. Then I left it there for hours with still no change. My youngest son is 10 years old, and was super excited to get his first Apple product. He earned and paid for it himself. It started to charge and sync, and we were excited to have found a new in the box Shuffle. My very first Apple product was this very same iPod Shuffle some 8-9 years ago. It has been flawless all of these years, and still looks as new. I still have the original box and accessories, all as new.

Now I have a Mac Pro, two 23" Apple Cinema HD Displays (on the way), a 27" iMac, a 21.5" iMac, a 15" Macbook Pro, a 13" Macbook Pro, an iPod Classic 5G, and loads of Apple adapters and accessories I have collected. My wife also has a 21.5" iMac, and my oldest daughter has a 15' Macbook Pro. My older son has an iPod Nano 3G, and my youngest daughter has an iPod Shuffle 2G. All legacy products.

Too bad they stopped making and supporting these Shuffle's.
