My itunes account says I can only have five devices. I have tried to deauthorize an older PC and get an error message. It will not deauthorize.
See Authorize or deauthorize your computer for iTunes Store purchases - Apple Support. Deauthorize all computers, then authorize those that you still want to use for working with protected media etc.
