When I press my volume buttons or brightness buttons they do nothing. How can I fix this?

My first response when asks me about this is "Do your other function keys work?" If the answer is no I ask the user to hold the FN key and try the function key again. If that works then open System Preferences, select the keyboard tab and and click off the bottom checkmark about using the F1, F2 as regular function keys.
