What iphones can I pair my Apple watch with?

I have an Apple iPhone 6 running iOS 12.4.3, can it support an Apple Watch Series 5? I keep getting the message, "your iPhone needs to be updated to the latest software". I just updated it to the latest software but it still won't pair.

You will need an iPhone 6S or newer in order to support the Apple Watch Series 5.
