For Microsoft Office, Office 2016 has an update. Earlier versions cannot be updated so either purchase or start subscribing to Office 365, or do not upgrade your macOS and continue using the old versions, or use an alternative product.

Earlier Office cannot be updated for free. We do not know what version the OP has.
Office 2016 updater to 64 bit compatibility is free. So Microsoft does offer a free update for this particular version, hence my comment about a flat statement about no free updates from Microsoft.

Given the OP mentioned having to pay after a trial period I made the assumption they weren't updating Office 2016 from 32bit to 64bit.
