Moving from Office 2008/2011, which have both been retired and unsupported for several years, is a paid upgrade to either the Office 365 subscription, or the single purchase Office 2019 for Mac. Microsoft does not sell life-time licenses.

Your alternative is the free, 64-bit LibreOffice Suite, which is an MS Office clone. Like MS Office, there will be a learning curve, even with their comprehensive user guides.

For Microsoft Office, Office 2016 has an update. Earlier versions cannot be updated so either purchase or start subscribing to Office 365, or do not upgrade your macOS and continue using the old versions, or use an alternative product.
