Not able to open the online textbook that is linked to Google Chrome on the classroom page.

My child was given and IPAD to use instead of the Chromebook all the kids have in his class. He is not able to open the online textbook that is linked to Google Chrome on the classroom page. I was told by the school that the IPAD will not allow a textbook to be opened in Chrome. Is this true?So now he has to carry a chromebook and an IPAD!

Some google searching has revealed that it does seem to be possible to access Holt McDougal eBooks on an iPad.

You may need to tweak some settings though.

From what I can find, you do need to use Google Chrome and you will need to allow popups.

Open Chrome, then tap on the 3 dots ..., then on Settings->Content Settings->Block Popups and make sure its turned off.

Then open the Holt McDougal site and try to log in.

You can try with Safari too after going to Settings->Safari->Block Popups.

There's nothing on an iPad that would inherently prevent a text book from being opened. The iPad does not get to decide what an app can or cannot open.

If it cannot be opened, it may be due to the format or DRM protection.

If Google Chrome on an iPad is not working to open the TextBook its an issue directly with the app rather than the iPad itself. But without knowing where the textbook is coming from or how its supposed to be accessed, its hard to say what can and cannot really be done.

Where is this textbook? What format is it in? What happens when you try to open it in Chrome on the iPad exactly?

While I do not know their side of the story, I do think that was a cop out answer by them. With iPad’s latest system software iPadOS 13, iPad now runs a full desktop version of Safari. There shouldn’t be any technical reason why it shouldn’t work. I would say that iPad that current generation iPad models have more usable memory than a Chromebook. I used to work in education and I would always shrug when a student was having an issue with a Chromebook. In my opinion, they are half-baked computers.

What is your iPad’s model number?

The textbook is viewable throught the textbook company's website Holt McDougal online. It brings us to a log on screen but the log in information does not work. The schools" tech" department claims that an iPad does not have enough memory to open the website but I do not think that is an issue since Chromebooks really don't have memory either. Its not a download or an app. I want to call their bluff but don't know much about how the IPAD works.

Thank you for your reply. I find it very helpful. I already called the school out on this and have requested an outside Tech consult. the inhouse "tech dept" really only knoews how to fix Chromebooks and work basic programs like Remind and Classroom. My district is infamous for trying to take the easy way out by saying " we can't" or "we don't do that" . Chromebooks are so useless. Im really standing my ground about making the IPAD work. Thank you.
