MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

I don't have a fix but I have a workaround that is working for me.

I have 2 x 4K displays USB-C capable, Caldigit Dock and a 2019 MBP 16"

Spec 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 32GB Ram and AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB

Previously I had CPU temps running wild and a setup that only worked in icy cold rooms.

I now idle around 65c and peak around 70 with 3 screen live in a normal warm room 24C

Workaround for me was.

  1. Get a fan tray. I can idle around 65c without after steps below but it helps keep temps usable underload.
  2. Connect both monitors via USB-C directly (hdmi/displayport adapter would add 5-10c) 1 can be via dock and the other direct. Note temps seems to stay higher for longer if I run on left ports instead of right but I opted for 1 on each side.
  3. Setting all 3 screens to the same scaling - default for display seems to give me the most stable with idle at 64c and as slower ramp up under load.

65c idle from a 45c idle just to have 3 screens running on a £4,000 laptop isn't acceptable however it is a vast improvement on 75c idle that would quickly ramp up under anyload to cpu throttle temps unless I sat with cold fresh air blowing in from the window next to me.

Really hope apple sort but I'm not sure they can, the crazy thing is the laptop has all the power I could need without external displays but with them I'm always battling 20+ C extra thermal load. Clam shelled with 2 external displays still sits at 63 or so.

Hope this helps someone.

I also have this problem. I did those things which helps the problem a bit:

  • Bought a laptop riser
  • Installed Turbo Boost Switcher
  • Cleaned the vents underneath which seems to have a fair amount of dust

I still hear the fans spinning but it’s quieter now.

Like most of you, I think this is irresponsible from Apple to be totally mute on this matter. They have more money than some countries. They should be able to first admit the problem, then help their customers with replacement units and/or a software update.

My experience is on the opposite:

  • 8k HDMI cable -> I have 4x of them
  • less expensive HDMI cable -> I have tons of them
  • Cheap Amazon basics HDMI cables

  • Apple USB-C -> HDMI adapter
  • 2x different (Satechi / Anker) USB-C -> HDMI adapters
  • USB-C -> HDMI cables (4x different ones)

  • 4k 65'' TV
  • 27'' 1080p monitor
  • Lenovo USB-C portable 1080p monitor
  • MSI USB-C / HDMI portable 1080p monitor
  • Atem Mini pro extreme ISO
  • 3x different HDMI -> USB adapters in Linux/Windows host (appear as 1080p or higher)
  • 4k Apple TV (bought it due to that)
  • Raspberry Pi software to offer Airplay
  • TV (Samsung) with Airplay

So my result, in reverse, makes no difference based on the cable, with power cable on, without power cable on, with power on the left, USB-C->HDMI on the right (and vice versa) etc etc etc.

Same sht no matter what I do. So my mileage varies a lot to your observations.

It would be convenient for Apple to say this is an issue like the older MacBook Pro 15s but it's not. This is a SERIOUS design problem because of how fast the disk/CPU/GPU/RAM is. The device is too fast for its own good and we should be aware we are going to be UNABLE to use this device to remotely do any work to PARTIALLY utilise it for what we paid for.

So there's this Ferrari with 750 horse power but you can only use up to 75 because the engine overheats and goes down to 25 horses max. Yay! You got a fancy Lada and you paid sht loads of money for it.

I demand a solution, sorry. If not, I not only never gonna buy Apple stuff again but I will be a negative ambassador no matter to whom I talk to. And someone who is easily able to buy a 4500k EUR device without financially sweating, probably is able to know and influence people who can also easily are able to spend this amount of money for Apple stuff.

What's the point of paying 250 EUR for a leather sleeve cover for your 16 inch MacBook Pro when the device itself worths probably 500 EUR in terms of performance? Hey, I might as well sell my leather sleeve, come to think of it. Very disappointed, even more so with the forum's censorship (see hints at my previous posts).

I read most of the almost 280 pages of this thread. Out of the 280 pages, 100 were basically produced by a single guy saying "there's on problem at all", "it's by design" and similar bs.

It's AMAZING how much noise was produced here with non tested information.

In short:

  • The only effective solution is to exchange your macbook with another model that uses AMD Radeon 5600
  • There's also a workaround that requires you to use macbook in clamshell mode.
  • EVERYTHING ELSE is noise (things that just false, untested, supposedly work for him but can't be reproduced by others or, at the most, just delay the problem).

I'm seeing the left side fan always 400 to 600 RPM's higher than the right side.

My machine under low to medium loads is often in the 5,000's with the most common numbers being: left side being 5,600 and right side 5,200.

I have used an Infrared Thermometer on the 16inch MacBook Pro and at times and my upper right area above the Touch Bar gets to 116 Fahrenheit. I often use Touch ID and notice the upper right is fairly hot.

For testing I have moved my two monitor cables from the right side to the left and back. I have moved my power and hub from left to ride side and back etc. Thought maybe having two usb-c monitor cables on one side could have been a problem.

Just been prompted to see if others have the same incredibly noisy MBP16".

My reminder about the issue was simply plugging in an external hard drive directly via USB C cable, and whoosh instant racket for 10 mins.

If I dare to use Lightroom then, fans full blazing and also long after quitting. Even though temps are not high.

If I have a couple of external monitors plugged in or not makes no difference. Laptop is now used closed, but IIRC it was just the same jet engine noise when no monitors were attached.

Even running 'normally', it's noticeably louder than either of my two Mac Pros or my previous MBP 17". I never noticed them and this new MBP is a constant annoying whine on my desk. Laptop is also off desk by around 2cm, so has plenty of airflow underneath it.

Hi,

so I got the base model of MacBook Pro 16" (512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB). I had similar problems few days ago.

I first turned off the True tone off, it helped a little.

But I am a front-end developer and I use terminal and webpack all the time. And in one particular project my fans were spinning like crazy. From activity monitor I found out that node.js process has 240% percent of CPU usage(!!). I know that most of you here does something else with this computer. But I managed to fix problems with the project and node.js and now my MacBook is now sooo quiet with many applications running, 2 node.js processes, 20chrome tabs, 2 vs codes, 1 Visual studio (building the project), everything is on the screenshot + I got my external display connected (it is not 4K, I need to try this with 4K when I get home).

loud fans, fans at high speed when just using safari, over heating; Same stuff described in other reviews is happening with my MacBook Pro 16, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB, 64GB RAM, 2T SSD, 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9.

10% CPU usage and the temp fluctuate between 80deg Celsius and 100 deg Celsius. What the heck is going on with this computer.

I have this computer since last Friday!

I just want to add that I'm experiencing a weird behavior of Mail app randomly reopening its window after initial closing it (the is still open, just the window that is closed), some times the window also reopens as half window especially when I'm watching a movie on full screen.

Following some people's recommendation of having turbo boost switcher pro app, I bought the app straight away after posting my previous message, and I can attest that computer is now very quiet in a similar manner to my previous 2017 MBP, here is a photo of the computer running on no boost with the having turbo boost switcher pro app ON .

Apple you should reimburse the 9.95$ that I paid for this app!! Shame for 4300$ product that is sold with heating and fan issues. A company making billions, with most cash than any other. Aren't you able to put on the market a product with high quality components and no flaws?!! Are you trying to fool your customers? Are shareholders too greedy to accept to have efficient products that will snap a bit of your profits?

Went home, laptop was on sleep mode, opened it. I disn’t have wifi. Only app open was Mail.

Once opened CPU usage went to 40% and Temp starts to go up and reached 90+

After I closed Mail core usage was 0.5% temp starts to go down (it’s in the low 30 deg by the time I’m writing)

Looks like Mail app was trying to connect and synchronize and was using to much cpu to desperately achieve that.

This particular situation shows that the issue is a mix of bad OS, bad app and bad machine configuration. The ressources of the machine are badly managed.

An observation I have made on my unit; the highest temperature recorded for the sensors on my machine nearly always is the "Platform Controller Hub Die"'; I can't find much in the way of info for this sensor; is it available on this machine? The value seems to be updated from somewhere, and it is always highest. Right now my machine is plugged into an external monitor, and with turbo boost off, my fans are consistently running at 2050-3050 (left always seems to be running faster, hotter) and the sensor is reading 74C.

Does anyone have any insight into what this sensor is measuring? I have attached a screenshot of my iStats menu with the reference.

Again, I think my MacBook is not nor was defective. The issue was in software I used (Node.js with external package which used 240% of CPU which made the fans go crazy). After I found solutions how to fix it I had another problem (again with node.js and it's node_modules folder), which made Spotlight indexes those files, which is useless, so I removed it from indexing and the macbook went quit. These are the fans with normal use without external monitor connected.

When I connect the external monitor fans are spinning around 2500rpm while VS code, Visual Studio and other software is in use. It gets more loud when I compile Xcode project, but only just for a few seconds.

So again, you who has problems, try to look at the activity monitor and try to find apps which are using a lot of CPU for no reason and try to fix the problem if you can.
